Artmedia News
===================================================

Welcome to the September edition of the e-publishing newsletter
from Artmedia in Sydney, now reaching over 7,000 writers,
publishers, bookshops, libraries and media-smiths in Australia,
New Zealand, America, Canada and worldwide.

In the eBook Report this month I update on the possible pirating
of paperbacks in the US, as a1Books sneaks their listing of
Believers in Love back into amazon zshops, after previously
promising never to sell it there again.

In the features I promote my readings from Believers in Love tour,
and invite newsletter subscribers in NZ, the USA and Canada,
particularly the many libraries on this list, to suggest opportunities to
present my book, which lends itself to a live performing situation,
and is suitable for story-telling and poetry events, as well as literary
events.

In the networking we get some feedback from last months item on
trAce online writing school, people with initiative and inventiveness
are sought for the National Poetry Week at the Queensland Poetry
Festival, Michael LaRocca offers a free ebook on How to Get
Published, and we have info on the DiGiT conference and
workshops.

We aim to provide an avenue of communication for the growing
electronic publishing community worldwide, so please send us
information for inclusion in this newsletter. Thank you for reading
Artmedia e-Publishing News. Please forward this to somebody
else who may be interested.

Alan Clay runs Artmedia Publishing. Alan's third novel, 'Believers in

stores or from bookshops throughout America, Canada, England,
Australia, and New Zealand.

eBook Report - Paperback Pirates - 'Used, like new' in the USA
===================================================

Much has been made recently of pirated music and films, but now
questions are now being asked in America about pirated books.
Just as with other media, the onset of the digital age has made the
pirating of paperbacks much easier, because these days many
books are printed individually from file, as required.

Believers in Love is proving so popular that companies across
America are discounting the recommended retail price and selling
the book 'used, like new' through Amazon zshops, a part of
amazon which functions a little like eBay where anyone can sell
books. Some of them even claim to have sold thousands of copies,
or to be holding stocks of the book in excess of the number sold
by Lightning Source, the authorized US content provider.

Lightning Source are based in St Louis, Missouri, and they print
and supply the books for those buying direct through Amazon.
But as all the other 'used like new' listings also come up in
searches for the book on amazon, buyers naturally choose the
lowest price.

Artmedia served a notice of demand on one of these discounters,
a1Books of Fairfield, New Jersey, in March to 'permanently stop
selling 'Believers in Love' and Clay's second novel 'Dance Sisters',
and remove all references to the books from the a1books.com
site and amazon zshops.

Although a1Books promised to stop selling the books, this month
the books reappeared in the a1Books zshops listing. If consumers
look closely at the feedback for each of the zshops, they will find
some with negative feedback about the delivery and condition of
a significant number of the books purchased, which should alert
them to the business practices of some of these companies.

Ordering 'Believers in Love' through the local bookshop, rather
than online, is one certain guarantee of the authentic product, and,
as with all the other media these days, it is up to consumers get a
quality product with good service, by buying the authentic article
and not the 'used like new' versions of the book.

Feature - 'Prose that sings like poetry' from storyteller - Readings Tour
===================================================

I will be in New Zealand from December 2002 to March 2003, and am
looking for opportunities to present my book, which lends itself to a live
performing situation, and is suitable for story-telling and poetry events,
as well as literary events.

American reviews of 'Believers in Love' have been so good, that I will
be touring North America from May to November 2003, and I am
looking for similar opportunities to present my book.

At this stage I will start the tour in Atlanta, Georgia, in May and then
head up the east coast in June, through Maryland, Virginia, and New
York, spend July to September in Canada, largely in Ontario, travel
to Hawaii in October, and spend November on the west coast of
America, in Washington, Oregon, and California.

I welcome enquiries from libraries in any of these states who are
interested in hosting a reading, or from organisers of poetry readings,
or festivals. There need not be any large cost in my participation, as
I will already be in the area. e-mail readings@artmedia.com.au

"Novelist Alan Clay breaks the mould of traditional romance to
make it an art of creation, in Believers in Love. The light tone of
the narrative belies the profound observations of life, art and love.
Believers in Love is a powerfully creative work, with prose that
sings like poetry. Beautifully told and evocatively rendered, this
novel comes very highly recommended." www.wordweaving.com

Hi Alan, I noticed a mention of the trAce online writing school. I'm
a tutor for the school (there about three Aussies) other tutors are
based in Canada, the US and the UK. Students can be based
anywhere in the world. I have made some great writing friends
through the school and highly recommend the courses, workshops
and 1-1 tuition, as well as the trAce writing community webpages
which offer a place to post writing about particular themes, discuss
writing in progress, join in collaborative writing or just generally chat
about writing and reading." Cheers Sharon. watagan@hunterlink.net.au

"Dear Alan, National Poetry Week (September 22-29, 2002) is an
initiative of the 2002 Queensland Poetry Festival, looking to foster
imaginative partnerships with poets, artists, bookstores and arts
organisations. QPF is looking for people with initiative and
inventiveness who can organise interesting events, readings, workshops
or exhibitions along a set of themes. The Director, Jayne Fenton Keane,
is particularly interested in poets and poetry appearing in public spaces
and in unusual partnerships. As there is no budget all events have been
organised on a voluntary basis. If you would like to organise an event
as part of National Poetry Week or contribute resources to the project,
please contact Jayne Fenton Keane. We need you now!" best wishes,
jayne jfk@poetinresidence.com
