Welcome to the May 2010 edition of the Artmedia physical theatre newsletter, your e-publication with an Australasian focus and a global perspective, now in its ninth year and reaching over 2,500 subscribers.

The May issue is coming out a little early this month, because of deadlines on some of our Networking items (see below) and in this issue we welcome items from a bigger range of our international subscribers.

In the Sponsorship this month we welcome Celebration Barn Theater in Maine (USA) with information on their summer season workshops. They offer world-class teachers in an environment far away from the distractions of everyday life. The one and two week workshops offer a range of workshops including neutral mask, art of movement and performance for musicians.

In the Playspace section, I have information on my July Clown Retreat in Wanganui, New Zealand, on which there are still a couple of places available. Students from Australia, New Zealand and France are currently enroled. In Angels Can Fly news, over 100 Australian high schools are now using the book in their drama departments.

In the Features we have information on Physical Fest, the annual physical theatre/movement workshop and performance festival in the UK. Organised by Tmesis Theatre in Liverpool, the workshops are run by some of the world’s best practitioners. Physical Fest starts June 5th.

In Networking we have information on the 2011 World Buskers Festival in Christchurch, New Zealand, which will take place January 20th - 30th, 2011. The Buskers Festival is an invite only event, so send in your expression of interest by July 20th. The Caroline Plummer Fellowship in Community Dance offered by the University of Otago is accepting applications for 2011. Applicants need not possess a university degree or diploma, or any other educational or professional qualification, but you will have a passion for community dance and want to be able to inspire learning, healing, and peace in the community through dance. The Fellowship is open to any New Zealand or international community dance practitioner, teacher or researcher.

The American Youth Circus Organization is holding a Youth Circus Educators Conference this September in Vermont (USA). It will be a weekend of engaging workshops, discussions, and skill building. And in partnership with the New England Center for Circus Arts (NECCA) they are offering professional trapeze teacher training in the 4 days leading up to the conference, which starts September 17th. In Philadelphia, the Five Minute Follies is looking for singers, dancers, jugglers, comedians, magicians, sideshow performers, and all kinds of variety acts to perform Saturday May 1st. Unusual acts are especially sought.

High Performance in London (UK) are casting for a show in Qatar. They need jugglers, fire jugglers, human statue, stilt walkers, acrobats, hula hoop, contortionists, acrobats, hand balancers, performers juggling other equipment, magicians, musicians, dancers, and actors for the 6 month contract beginning November 6th. And the Southern Lights Circus and Street Arts Festival in Kimmeridge, which runs June 11th - 13th, is calling for people who can offer circus skills workshops. The Festival aims to bring like minded people together to teach each other and swap skills and tricks and to provide a wide variety of workshops from beginner to advanced.

In Hamburg, Germany, Buskers Ville is being held as part of the International Festival of Street Arts, STAMP, on September 3rd - 5th. Approximately 20 groups will be selected for Buskers Ville. Applications close May 15th. The Stockholm Academy of Dramatic Arts is offering a 1 year masters program in Physical Comedy. The program which begins January 2011 is a unique collaboration between the academy and the aid organisation Clowns without Borders Sweden. Application deadline is May 31st.

Dance Day will be celebrated all over the world on April 29th by the international community of dancers. This is an International Dance Council CID, UNESCO initiative, created to attract the attention of the wider public to the art of dance. Events are being organized by dance companies, amateur groups, schools, associations and other institutions active in dance. And in Cambodia, the International Circus Festival, Tini Tinou, is inviting circus artists to be part of this year's Festival. Every year artists and troupes from more than 10 different countries attend. If you would like to provide a workshop send in your application before July 15th. Tini Tinou runs November 15th to December 12th.

We aim to provide an avenue of communication for the physical theatre community, so send us information for inclusion in this newsletter, and please also forward this to someone else who may be interested.

Clown Retreat 2010 - Wanganui, New Zealand
Wednesday July 14th to Sunday July 18th (5 days) 10am to 4pm each day.

Reconnect with the playful, inquisitive, cheeky, clown spirit in a beautiful outdoor setting, overlooking the mouth of the Wanganui river. Following the last two clown retreats in Wanganui, we find that the relaxed atmosphere and secluded environment means that students get more out of the contact hours and can also process and discuss the work outside of the class.

Modern clown is less character based and more interactive than traditional clown, it is less about hiding behind make-up and more about revealing our true selves, and less about routine based entertainment and more about spontaneous artistic expression. We need training and tools to facilitate these new skills in our work, and this workshop aims to give participants a way of working which supports this process.

The fees include six nights accommodation with kitchen facilities. The Clown Retreat will be held in a secluded studio within reach of breathtaking west coast beaches, bush walks and jet boat or canoe expeditions, but still handy to good coffee and all the facilities.

The workshop is aimed at those with a professional interest in clown. It is suitable both for beginners and for those with experience, and it functions best with this mix in the class. There will be a minimum of four and maximum of eight on the workshop. Students from Australia, New Zealand and France are currently enroled and there are still a couple of places available.

NZ$650 Earlybird (by June 1) NZ$750 Full, including 6 nights accommodation with kitchen facilities. (All fees and deposits are non-refundable) email: clown@artmedia.com.au to hold a place or make enquiries about this workshop.

Many of the exercises in the retreat are taken from Alan's book, Angel's Can Fly, a Modern Clown User Guide. Over 100 Australian high schools are now using Angels Can Fly in their drama departments. You can find information on Angels Can Fly at http://www.alanclay.com including some of the exercises, a link to an excerpt of the book on Google Books, and an eBook for the Microsoft reader. If you are unable to attend the retreat in Wanganui you might find that reading Angels Can Fly provides a similar experience. People say: "I'm reading your book and loving it. I feel like I'm involved in one of your workshops." Buy the book on  Amazon

Feature:   Body Weather & Butoh Weekend Workshop led by Tess de Quincey, June 18th - 20th, Sydney

horizontal rule

This workshop will provide an immersion in Body Weather principles alongside elements of Butoh training.

Body Weather is a broadbased, comprehensive physical training which cultivates a conscious relation to the state of constant change inside and outside the body. It is an open investigation that can be relevant for anyone interested in exploring the body. Butoh arose in the 1950's, but references origins in ancient Japan. It is a contemporary dance form emphasising images which transform and explore extremities of the body. Body Weather was founded by butoh dancer Min Tanaka and his Mai-Juku Performance Co in Japan. This intensive workshop will be led by Tess de Quincey who was a dancer with Mai-Juku 1985-91. Body Weather is the basis of her performance practice and underlies the work of De Quincey Co – www.DeQuinceyCo.net

The workshop introduces participant to three different areas of the practice which vary between high-energy work and more quiet meditative sessions:-
MB (Muscles><Bones / Mind><Body) - a dynamic and rhythmic work-out which includes aerobic and anaerobic exercises to develop strength, coordination and a vibrant, physical grounding;
Manipulations - a series of precise forms concerned with stretching and alignment on the basis of breath and weight;
Ground Work - a wide variety of exercises to sharpen sensorial focus and to develop sensitivity, awareness and the scope of expression through the body.

The workshop will be held at Rex Cramphorn Studio - Department of Performance Studies, The University of Sydney.

Bookings are essential as places are limited, so please register as soon as possible to ensure your place on the workshop. Early Bird payment $100 by 15 May or $160 full payment.

"Dance Day, International Dance Council, UNESCO, world wide. On the 29th of April, as every year since 1982, Dance Day will be celebrated all over the world by the international community of dancers. It is an initiative of the International Dance Council CID, UNESCO. The main purpose of Dance Day events is to attract the attention of the wider public to the art of dance. Emphasis should be given to addressing a “new” public, people who do not follow dance events during the course of the year. Dance Day events may be special performances, open-door classes, public rehearsals, lectures, exhibitions, articles in newspapers and magazines, dance evenings, radio and TV programs, visits, street shows, parades, shop window decorations etc. Events are primarily organized by dance companies, amateur groups, schools, associations and other institutions active in dance. Wherever possible, it is better for events to be organized jointly with a non-dance institution such as a government agency, a public school, a municipality, a business enterprise, a trade union. At best, events should take place in “new” places, such as streets, parks, squares, shops, factories, villages, discotheques, schools, stadiums etc. By setting the event in original surroundings you stress the fact that this is an event dedicated to the universal family of dancers. More ideas for Dance Day can be found on the CID website." Dr. Alkis Raftis, President of the CID. Before the Festival, two weeks of workshops are held in Battambang by professionals and senior artists to exchange their skills with young pre-professional artists so as to foster mutual understanding and favouring cultural exchanges. If you are a circus artist who would like to be part of the Festival, please go to our web site to download the application form. The Festival provides a fixed fee, accommodation and catering.
