Welcome to the February 2012 edition of the Artmedia physical theatre news, your e-publication with an Australasian focus and a global perspective, now in its tenth year and reaching over 2,500 subscribers. This newsletter is an occasional publication which we put out when there is demand from Sponsors and Feature advertisers and we invite you to support the publication by contacting us about promoting your work.

In the Sponsorship this month we welcome the Accademia dell'Arte with information on their Performing Arts Programs in Tuscany, Italy. Students live, eat and study in a spectacular sixteenth century Renaissance villa overlooking the hills of Tuscany and the city of Arezzo. Their programs for undergraduates, graduates and professionals include a one month summer program and a two and a half year MFA in Physical Theatre plus other training and performance opportunities. Accademia dell'Arte is also the co-organizer of the CrisisArt Festival in July and they invite performing artists and arts activists to come and share their visions of the future.

My new Modern Clown Summer School is in its final week with some wonderful clowns attending from NZ, Australia and France. The three week structure has really given students time both to learn the tools of the trade and to practice them by developing performance material and students have been using the weekend breaks to go on tramping and jet boating adventures. I have information in the Playspace section below on next January's Summer School.

In Networking we have information on the Adelaide Fringe Festival in Australia. There are $5 tickets available for many of the shows on Opening Night February 24th, so take advantage of this great price and support the Fringe. In Victoria, Alex Pinder is offering a Physical Comedy Weekend Workshop on March 17th and 18th. This promises to be a fun workshop with plenty of laughs creating clown characters and comic skits.

The Registration Evening for the Sydney Fringe Festival is being held Friday March 2nd. Expect an evening of great entertainment and the Fringe team will be on hand to answer any burning questions. Also in NSW, the biennial Catapult Festival showcasing young circus & physical theatre performers is being held March 29th - 31st. This year the Festival includes 'The Renegade Show' on Friday March 30th, which is an informal evening of performance hosted by Charles Sturt University students.

In the US, Celebration Barn are offering a month-long performance intensive starting July 2nd. The daily classes are designed to make you push the boundaries of creative theater. The workshop is open to performers of all experience levels. In New Mexico, Wise Fools is casting a new physical theatre production to debut next year. They are looking for aerialists, stilt acrobats, dancers and physical theatre performers. Auditions will be held in Santa Fe, May 17th - 27th. The Cabiri in Seattle are offering a performance opportunity for 6 - 8 aerial silks students. Six weeks of classes and rehearsals will be followed by six performances of 'Tarhun: Legend of the Lightning God'. The Thursday night classes start February 23rd.

In Sweden, the Stockholm Fringe Fest, also known as Stoff, is calling for submissions for performances and theatre proposals for the August festival. The deadline for submissions is March 11th. And Espace Périphérique in France has residencies for Circus, Street Arts and Puppetry. Their aim is to support the creation of new shows and to give a place for creation and research. Application deadline is February 29th. And the Armenian High Fest International Performing Arts Festival is seeking puppetry and performances for children for their festival in October. Registration ends March 15th.

Circus arts magazine, Spectacle, is now online. Editor/publisher, Ernest Albrecht, has created a monthly publication that covers the world of circus for the professional as well as the scholar. And performers Hilary Chaplain and Audrey Crabtree are traveling to India as part of a Clowns Without Borders project to work with underprivileged children and they are raising needed funds. Read more on how you can help them below.

We aim to provide an avenue of communication for the physical theatre community, so promote your event or project by taking a Feature or a Sponsorship in this newsletter, and please also forward this to someone else who may be interested.

Playspace: 'Modern Clown' Summer School with Alan Clay, Wanganui, New Zealand

horizontal rule

Modern Clown Summer School 2013, 10am - 4pm Monday to Friday, January 28th - February 15th (3-weeks accommodation, 15 work days, no training on weekends)

Reconnect with the playful, inquisitive, cheeky, clown spirit in a private studio space with adjoining dormitory accommodation, overlooking the mouth of the Wanganui river. This course is led by Alan Clay at his retreat centre in New Zealand.

Each day will start with a yoga warm up and participants will work physically to free themselves from patterns and to connect with their emotions. Clown is empathic, 'feeling with' the audience, and it is also playful, open to the impulses in each moment, and this workshop will train and develop these skills through improvisation exercises. Street theatre has informed and assisted the development of modern clown, and participants will take exercises from the studio and work at street-cafe's to develop interactive audience skills. It's easy and fun.

The summer school is aimed at those with a professional interest in clown. It is suitable both for beginners and for those with experience, and it functions best with this mix in the class. There will be a minimum of four and maximum of eight on the workshop. The residential nature of the summer school provides a relaxed atmosphere and secluded environment which means that students get more out of the contact hours and can also process and discuss the work outside of the class.

The summer school runs 10am - 4pm Monday to Friday from January 28th - February 15th 2013. Participants will have the weekends free and the studio will be available for individual work. The studio is within reach of breathtaking west coast beaches, bush walks and jet boat or canoe expeditions, but still handy to good coffee and all facilities.

Fees: NZ$1300 Price Buster (by May 1st) NZ$1500 Earlybird (by August 31st) and NZ$1800 Full. A NZ$300 deposit will hold a place. (All fees and deposits are non-refundable). Fees include 20 nights accommodation (from January 27th - February 15th inclusive) with kitchen facilities.

Enrolment: Send an email to:
clown@artmedia.com.au to hold a place or make enquiries about this workshop.

Feature: Angels Can Fly, a Modern Clown User Guide - now available for the Kindle, iPad and Kobo readers

horizontal rule

Angel's Can Fly is available for the Kindle reader from Amazon and for the Apple iPad through the iBooks app at iTunes. We recommend purchasing the book for the Kindle or the iPad as this gives you the best value product and the most versatile reading experience. The ebook costs only US$9.99 and is searchable with links between pre-requisite and co-requisite exercises. The ebook can also be purchased for the Kobo reader in New Zealand through Whitcoulls or in Australia through Borders or Angus & Robertson.

Angels Can Fly is now in use in the drama departments of over 150 Australian and New Zealand high schools and has started to make its way into US and UK universities. This is a textbook for a fast changing art form, as clown escapes from the circus to perform in theatres and streets. The traditional approach to teaching clown is routine or gag based and this sits uncomfortably both with the teaching practices in modern performing arts education and with today's audiences. This book includes a total of 50 practical clown exercises appropriate for workshops or performance, developed by Alan Clay through 30 years of teaching. Specific prerequisites to any exercise are detailed in each chapter.

"New Online Circus Magazine, Spectacle, Ernest Albrecht. It has taken a bit longer than we would have liked to get started in this new medium, and we are not yet fully where we want to be, but I did want to get out this first edition to stay in touch and publish my reviews of the various and varied shows I have seen since last we talked. As we gain greater confidence in making this work, we are looking forward to providing more photographic images with links to the show being reviewed or reported on. Within the next several weeks I will be traveling to Monte Carlo to review the festival there, after which I will go on to Paris to catch the Cirque de Demain festival and see the new productions of the Gruss and Bouglione families. I will also be reviewing the spectacular Broadway musical Spider Man—Turn off the Dark and offering insights into the circus rigging that helps make it so spectacular. In February, it will be time for Circus Sarasota. March brings The Greatest Show on Earth to my area of the country; I look forward to writing about its new production. Hopefully these reviews will be out in early February, as we are aiming for a monthly publication format, as long as there are reviews and stories to share with you. I hope the new Spectacle will carry on from where we left off in pint." Ernest Albrecht, online editor/publisher, Spectacle - an online journal of the circus arts.
