Welcome to the February 2011 edition of the Artmedia physical theatre news, your e-publication with an Australasian focus and a global perspective, now in its tenth year and reaching over 2,500 subscribers. This newsletter has now become an occasional publication, which we put out when there is demand from Sponsors and Feature advertisers and we invite you to support the publication by promoting your work.

In the Sponsorship this month we welcome Accademia dell’Arte in Arezzo, Italy. They offer undergraduate, graduate and professional experiences, working within an environment dedicated to training, researching and experimenting. They have a range of courses including circus arts, Commedia dell'Arte, dance performance, theatre and music. Find out about the many training and study opportunities on offer in a variety of spectacular settings.

A big hello to those gathering in Levin for the NZ juggling Convention starting tomorrow and in Adelaide for the Fringe Festival, which kicks off on Friday.  If you're in Adelaide but not performing this year, we have information in the Networking on a 'how to register' event for next year's festival and also one for all those who want to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe.

In the Playspace section, there are still one or two places available on the 5-day Clown Retreat in Wanganui the week after next, so take the opportunity to develop your clown tool kit, or take the leap into an artform that you've always wanted to develop. This will be the last 5-day workshop I will run, as I am launching a new 3-week Clown Summer School to be held in Wanganui in January 2012. More info below.

My book on modern clown, Angel's Can Fly , has just been released as an eBook for the Apple iPad and is available through the iBooks app at iTunes. I recommend this version as this gives you the best value product and the most versatile reading experience of any format, as it is searchable, has a detailed contents and contains links between pre-requisite and co-requisite exercises.  Angels Can Fly is also available as an ebook for the Kobo reader.

In the Features, the world renowned Philippe Genty Company is opening an International Academy for Visual Theatre in Paris in the European fall. Initiated by Philippe Genty and Mary Underwood, it will be called the 'Academy of the Impossible'.  This nine month course based in Paris will provide interdisciplinary tools for the experienced performer.

Also featured is Total Theatre, now celebrating 10 years, who are currently holding 2nd round auditions for their 3-month intensive beginning in April, which is directed by Annie Stainer. With Steven Berkoff as patron, the course offers comprehensive physical theatre training in Perth, with some of the best specialist teachers and practitioners.

In Networking we have information on work for six Living Statues at the Dunedin Fringe Festival in New Zealand. The 'Still Life at the Station' event is March 19th, so if you're interested, get in contact immediately.

In the US, Air Born Aerial Arts is holding open auditions for aerialists and ground acts in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia for ongoing gigs in those regions. Auditions will be held March 20th or you can submit a video. In Iowa, the Ogden Fun Days Summer Festival is holding a Family Entertainers Contest June 18th. There is no fee, but registration numbers are limited to 30.

The Stockholm Fringe Festival (STOFF) is calling for submissions from emerging artists. They are looking for work that explores the possibilities of theatre, performance and installation making. The Swedish festival kicks off August 22nd and the application deadline is March 20th.

In the UK, the Minifest for Street Arts in Cumbria is holding a 10 day "International Summer School for Street Arts" that starts August 27th. And from February 7 to June 9th, DV8 Physical Theatre is opening up their morning classes during the rehearsal period for their new production. These classes are for dancers with strong technique and applications for each class will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

In Catalonia, the Nouveau Clown Institute is holding a seminar on "Tips and Tools for Accessing the International Performing Arts Touring Market". This unique seminar is being presented (in English only) by David Berga on February 21.

We aim to provide an avenue of communication for the physical theatre community, so promote your event or project by taking a Feature or a Sponsorship in this newsletter, and please also forward this to someone else who may be interested.

Playspace: Clown Retreat with Alan Clay - Wanganui, New Zealand

horizontal rule

This month we launch a new 3-week Clown Summer School to be held in Wanganui in January next year. There are one or two places still available on the last 5-day retreat, so take the opportunity to develop your clown tool kit, or take the leap into an artform that you've always wanted to develop.
"The challenge with teaching clown is to achieve as much as possible in the short time available and many clown teachers use a cathartic breakthrough style.

"When I developed my five day workshop series, my aim was to provide students with a series of tools, which they could use in performance situations, thereby empowering them to explore the art form through working in front of an audience.

"I am now launching a new 3-week Clown Summer School to be held in Wanganui in January 2012. In this course I am keen to not only give students the tools to work with, but also the opportunity to practice those skills, so they become more second nature."  --Alan Clay

Clown Retreat March 2011
Tuesday March 1st to Saturday March 5th (5 days) 10am to 4pm each day.

Reconnect with the playful, inquisitive, cheeky, clown spirit in a beautiful outdoor setting, overlooking the mouth of the Wanganui river. Following the last two clown retreats in Wanganui, we find that the relaxed atmosphere and secluded environment means that students get more out of the contact hours and can also process and discuss the work outside of the class.

The fees include six nights accommodation with kitchen facilities. The Clown Retreat will be held in a secluded studio within reach of breathtaking west coast beaches, bush walks and jet boat or canoe expeditions, but still handy to good coffee and all the facilities. The workshop is aimed at those with a professional interest in clown. It is suitable both for beginners and for those with experience, and it functions best with this mix in the class. There will be a minimum of four and maximum of eight on the workshop.

NZ$650, including 6 nights accommodation with kitchen facilities. (All fees and deposits are non-refundable) email: clown@artmedia.com.au to hold a place or make enquiries about this workshop.

Clown Summer School January 2012
10am - 4pm Monday to Friday, January 23rd - February 10th (no training on weekends, but participants will have use of studio)

Modern clown is less character based and more interactive than traditional clown, it is less about hiding behind make-up and more about revealing our true selves, and less about routine based entertainment and more about spontaneous artistic expression. We need training and tools to facilitate these new skills in our work, and this workshop aims to give participants a way of working which supports this process.

NZ$1100 Price Buster (by August 31st)  NZ$1300 Earlybird (by November 1st) and NZ$1600 Full. Includes 20 nights accommodation (from January 22nd - February 10th inclusive) with kitchen facilities. (All fees and deposits are non-refundable) email: clown@artmedia.com.au to hold a place or make enquiries about this workshop.

horizontal rule

ACADEMY OF THE IMPOSSIBLE - the impossible, one possibility among others...

Initiated by Philippe Genty and Mary Underwood, the Philippe Genty Company is opening an International Academy for Visual Theatre in Paris  in the fall of this year.

The Academy of the Impossible proposes complementary training for confirmed performers, providing interdisciplinary tools to create a visual theatrical language: acting, dance/movement, object manipulation and voice/music. The work encourages artists to develop their personal resources through listening, conviction, impulse, fixed points, dissociation, distancing, improvisation, memory, relation to object & material and occupation of space.

Based in Paris, it is a nine months course with a minimum of twenty hours per week. Mornings will be devoted to physical warm-ups, followed by acting techniques or exploratory work. The Academy's studio will be available in the afternoons to those students eager to explore further. A basic knowledge of French is preferable.

For more information (details about the course, the staff, admission requirements, costs) please contact Eric de Sarria at cie.philgenty@free.fr

Feature: Total Theatre – 3-Month Physical Theatre Training, April 2011 - Western Australia

Patron – Steven Berkoff

Are you looking for a comprehensive training in Physical Theatre? Then why not come to Perth. Total Theatre (established in 2002) is now one of Australia’s leading training centres for those wishing to pursue a career in Physical Theatre, bringing together some of the best specialist teachers and practitioners of the profession and delivering a well rounded high calibre training.

In 2011 we are celebrating 10 years! And once again we are pleased to be offering our popular 3-month intensive Physical Theatre training (beginning April 2011). This course includes: Acting, Mime, Dance, Feldenkrais, Improvisation, Circus Arts, Aerial Skills, Voice, Singing, Stage Combat, Martial Arts, Commedia dell’Arte and How to Market Yourself. This is a unique opportunity for those wishing to take advantage of this popular training in a more condensed form than our one-year course (or for those wishing to short-cut their training in order to enter, more readily, the performance industry).

Feature: Angels Can Fly, a Modern Clown User Guide - now available for the iPad and Kobo readers

horizontal rule

Angel's Can Fly has just been released for the Apple iPad and is available through the iBooks app at iTunes. (ISBN: 9780957884489) We recommend purchasing the book for the iPad as this gives you the best value product and the most versatile reading experience. The ebook costs only US$9.99 and is searchable with links between pre-requisite and co-requisite exercises. The ebook can also be purchased for the Kobo reader in New Zealand through Whitcoulls or in Australia through Borders or Angus & Robertson.

Angels Can Fly is now in use in the drama departments of over 100 Australian high schools and has started to make its way into US and UK universities. This is a textbook for a fast changing art form, as clown escapes from the circus to perform in theatres and streets. The traditional approach to teaching clown is routine or gag based and this sits uncomfortably both with the teaching practices in modern performing arts education and with today's audiences.

This book includes a total of 50 practical clown exercises appropriate for workshops or performance, developed by Alan Clay through 30 years of teaching. Specific prerequisites to any exercise are detailed in each chapter.

There are warm-up and introductory exercises in the early chapters, mid-session or mid-course exercises in the middle chapters, and more performance-oriented exercises, and relaxation exercises, in the final chapters. The exercises have all been coded for individual exploration, for work in pairs, for workshop use, or for use in a performance setting, or for some combination of these.
