Welcome to the March edition of the Artmedia newsletter, a
publication with an Australasian focus and a global perspective.
This month we also welcome Cirque du Soleil as sponsor - yes guys we have finally made the big time - to promote their open auditions in Sydney and Melbourne for dancers, singers and actors, including clowns.
And in Playspace news, in response to popular demand, I add workshops in Auckland, New Zealand, and Sydney, Australia, to my clown masterclass program, and urge those interested, particularly in Auckland, to contact me quickly to secure your place. Places are also filling in the workshops in Melbourne, Singapore, Ottawa and in Connecticut.
In the networking, we have information on participation in the Magdalena Australia Festival in Brisbane, and on applications for the Linz International Street Theatre Festival in Austria, as well as the International Symposium of Youth Theatre in Montpellier, France, to be held in conjunction with the International Drama in Education General Council Meeting.
In the noticeboard, we have information on a Circus Family and Artistic Agency in Russia, a search for standup comedy mentoring in Sydney, and a Suzuki Method of Actor Trainer seeks work.
This month the newsletter is being brought to you with the assistance of Cirkidz in Adelaide, Australia, who run circus classes for children, and have hosted the Australian Circus and Physical Theatre Conference over the past few days. Wow! ( find a link to Cirkidz at www.artmedia.com.au/links.htm )
We'll have more on the Australian Circus and Physical Theatre Association, who run the conference, in future issues, as I am now the Membership Development officer, so why not check out their site www.nationalcircus.asn.au and become a member.
We aim to provide an avenue of communication for the growing physical theatre community, so please send us info for inclusion in this newsletter. Please also forward this to somebody else who may be interested.
Remember to check out the Artmedia site, as we update the information constantly. www.artmedia.com.au On the site you can find a useful list of links to performers, companies, resources and festivals all over the world, and you can subscribe to this newsletter and find a copy of the latest issue.

Alan Clay will teach a series of six 4-day clown masterclasses in five countries over the next few months.
"For me the key to clown is playfulness. We can all play, although we often loose the ability as we advance with our theatre practice, because our successful patterns trap us into not taking risks and so not growing in our work."

"In the best clown tradition Alan Clay held up a window-mirror for us to step through and reflect on the patterns, habits and rituals of our days. It was funny, moving and excellent theatre." New Zealand Herald
This Clown Masterclass program has been created to provide an advanced platform for the development and practice of clown skills. Some students with no experience will also find this course suitable, simply by releasing themselves to the process.
The workshop provides a physical approach to the clown art form, exploring playfulness, irreverence, and the freedom of not knowing. Each day starts with a yoga warm up, followed by exercises to develop physical and emotional expression, and improvisational exercises to develop comic timing and audience rapport.
Alan studied clown in Sweden in 1977, and has since taught and performed throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand, including nine tours to European Festivals. For the past five years he has run Playspace Studio in Sydney, where his Circus and Clown Training has gained a worldwide reputation.

"Dear Alan, I work in a small theatre company for teenagers. At the same time I am the treasurer of IDEA, the International Drama/theatre in Education Association. Every year with my company we organise an international encounter of adolescent theatre. This year we decided to have a more important event, the International symposium of Youth Theatre : 3rd edition. Dates of the encounters from Sunday April 20th to Monday April 28th. 10 groups of young people aged 15 to 20, from ten different countries, are invited to participate in this project. Each group will consist of 8 to 15 youngsters who have practiced drama/theatre for some years and who work with professional artists. The staff of Outil Théâtre and the associate partners of these Encounters will select the participants according to criteria ensuring that there will be 4 countries from the European Community, 6 countries outside the European Community and at least one country representing each continent. The IDEA General Council Meeting will be held in conjunction, from April 20th to 29th. IDEA currently represents 53 countries and 68 national associations, and the meeting will consist of the delegates of these associations, about a hundred people, teachers, drama practitioners and artists who work in the field."
